What is Human Trafficking?

According to UNODC, “Human trafficking and migrant smuggling are global and widespread crimes that use men, women, and children for profit. The organized networks or individuals behind these lucrative crimes take advantage of people who are vulnerable, desperate or simply seeking a better life.”

The Stats on Human Trafficking

According to NCRB, in 2018, 5264 cases of migrant smuggling were reported in India, and 64% were females, and 48% of victims were less than 18 years of age. 

The Vulnerable Groups 

In most cases, economically disadvantaged people and those belonging to the SC, ST, and OBC categories are most vulnerable. 

Causes of Trafficking

The key causes of human trafficking are:

  • Social or cultural practices
  • Corruption of government officials
  • Migration
  • Involvement of and support by international organized criminal groups
